1913-P South Africa Gold Sovereign – NGC AU58

A scarce and desirable pre-World War I gold issue, this 1913-P South Africa Gold Sovereign is certified NGC AU58, just one point shy of Mint State, making it a standout example from the final year of sovereign production before the global conflict disrupted gold coinage.

Struck at the Pretoria Mint (indicated by the “P” mintmark), this sovereign contains .2354 oz of 22k gold and features the timeless design beloved by collectors around the world. The obverse bears the crowned bust of King George V, elegantly rendered with crisp detail, while the reverse showcases Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic depiction of St. George slaying the dragon—a symbol of victory and courage that has graced sovereigns since the early 19th century.

Graded AU58 by NGC, this coin retains nearly full original luster with only the slightest trace of circulation on the highest points. It offers strong eye appeal, clean fields, and sharp details—an excellent choice for collectors who want premium quality without the premium price of a Mint State example.

With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, gold sovereign production was severely curtailed, and the 1913-P issue stands as one of the last sovereigns struck in South Africa before the war changed the face of global coinage. Increasingly sought after for its historic importance, gold content, and striking design, this AU58 example represents excellent value for both collectors and investors alike.

A superb addition to any world gold or sovereign collection.

‘’Found a couple of the 2009 Formative Years” I have been looking for. Came to Copperstate Coins responding to an ad not knowing they were a coin dealer. Met with Ivy to pick up my rolls. All in the store were extremely polite not pushy helpful and I left with more than I came in for. Without a doubt greatest place to go if you’re just getting into the hobby, which I am, I will be a frequent customer. Thank you!!’’
